The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is the world’s top spot for learning from top professionals. Each session is full of useful insight and knowledge and designed to give delegates a competitive advantage. All of the sessions described below are open to all the delegates.
Unlike any other global awards festival, Cannes Lions is packed with structured (and unstructured) learning sessions. These sessions include seminars, workshops, and master classes. In addition, in 2012, Cannes Lions added forums and Techtalks. Each session is led by a leading professional either on the marketing communication, media or brand side of the business.
The primary learning blocks of Cannes Lions are seminars. During the week over fifty 45-minute-long seminars are offered to give delegates cutting-edge information about the latest trends and insights affecting advertising and communication. The keynote presentations are held “live” in the Debussy theatre with holds over 700 delegates. Highlights include seminars by Coca-Cola, Facebook, Nike & R/GA, Saatchi & Saatchi’s new director’s showcase, BBDO, and the Cannes Lions debate among many others.
In 2012, over 17 workshops were offered. These sessions include up to 100 delegates and are focused on a specific topic. For example, App Promo offered a workshop titled, “The Secrets of Being a No. 1 App and Not Losing Money.” Each workshop has a specific purpose and delegates leave the session with useful knowledge. The sessions are usually participatory and a lot of fun.
Specifically designed for young professionals, master classes are usually attended by delegates of all ages. Sages and legends such as Jeff Goodby, Tony Granger, and Sir John Hegarty spend an hour talking about getting into the business and lessons they’ve learned over the years. They also show their work and give advice. These sessions are informal, usually with students and delegates sitting around the speaker, and are a highlight of the festival.
Forums offer yet another opportunity to learn from professionals at the cutting edge. These hour-long sessions usually revolve around a theme of the day such as “Creativity in Mobile Advertising” and “The Creative Future of Media.” Following that theme, six hour-long presentations reveal the latest thinking and innovations around those topics. Speakers include executives from leading firms such as Nielsen, Naked, EA, Diageo, Google, and Y&R among many others.
Because technology is so important in today’s communications, Cannes Lions offers TechTalks. These 45-minute sessions give delegates an opportunity to get close to new startups and tech firms at the frontiers of consumer engagement. Recent presenters include Pixxers, Tremor Video, PubMatic, and Viggle among others.
